Can personality traits be measured analyzing written language? a meta-analytic study on computational methods

In the last two decades, empirical evidence has shown that personality traits could be related to the characteristics of written language. This study describes a meta-analysis that synthesizes 23 independent estimates of the correlations between the Big Five major personality traits, and some computationally obtained indicators from written language. The results show significant combined estimates of the correlations, albeit small to moderate according to Cohen's conventions to interpret effect sizes, for the five traits (between r = 0.26 for agreeableness and neuroticism, and 0.30 for openness). These estimates are moderated by the type of information in the texts, the use of prediction mechanisms, and the source of publication of the primary studies. Generally, the same effective moderators operate for the five traits. It is concluded that written language analyzed through computational methods could be used to extract relevant information of personality. But further research is still needed to consider it as predictive or explanatory tool for individual difference

Reusing Treated Waste-Water from a Circular Economy Perspective The Case of the Real Acequia de Moncada in Valencia (Spain)

[EN] One of the most important challenges that agriculture faces is sustainable water management and its adaptation to climate change. This adaptation is more important in regions where recurrent draughts and overexploitation of water resources happen. However, historical irrigation systems, such as the Real Acequia de Moncada (RAM) in Valencia, have found innovative approaches to deal with this phenomenon. This paper analyzes the case of Massamagrell and Puçol, which reused the treated waste-water of the closest waste-water treatment plant (WWTP). The study focused from a circular economy perspective on the technological, agronomical, and social implications of this decision. Results show that there are clear benefits for both farmers and WWTP managers. On the one hand, additional nutrients and regularity in their water supply benefit farmers. On the other, WWTP managers can reuse the treated effluent in the system, contributing to the closure of the water cycle and avoiding pumping the treated water into the sea. However, more detailed information and coordination is needed among the different stakeholders. Questions regarding the illegal connection of waste pipes with the traditional irrigation or the payment of pumping costs for reuse have gone unanswered, and there is a need for better reflection from all stakeholders. This paper presents the construction of a cluster based on low-end FPGAs, capable of executing very data-intensive programs in the same or less time than a workstation with 56 logical cores, with much higher cost and consumption.

The use of High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools is a common practice in circuit design companies. The main benefit of these tools consists of diminishing time to market, as they provide multiple solutions to explore in a reduced amount of time. In this paper we propose the use of a highly visual synthesis tool, which implements the classic algorithms to teach students the basic HLS concepts and to get them closer to the companies’ methodology. In this way, Computer Architecture and Technology related subjects will offer a more complete programme to the future graduates.

SWIMM 2.0: Enhanced Smith–Waterman on Intel’s Multicore and Manycore Architectures Based on AVX-512 Vector Extensions

    Get PDF
The well-known Smith–Waterman (SW) algorithm is the most commonly used method for local sequence alignments, but its acceptance is limited by the computational requirements for large protein databases. Although the acceleration of SW has already been studied on many parallel platforms, there are hardly any studies which take advantage of the latest Intel architectures based on AVX-512 vector extensions. This SIMD set is currently supported by Intel’s Knights Landing (KNL) accelerator and Intel’s Skylake (SKL) general purpose processors. In this paper, we present an SW version that is optimized for both architectures: the renowned SWIMM 2.0. The novelty of this vector instruction set requires the revision of previous programming and optimization techniques. SWIMM 2.0 is based on a massive multi-threading and SIMD exploitation. It is competitive in terms of performance compared with other state-of-the-art implementations, reaching 511 GCUPS on a single KNL node and 734 GCUPS on a server equipped with a dual SKL processor. Moreover, these successful performance rates make SWIMM 2.0 the most efficient energy footprint implementation in this study achieving 2.94 GCUPS/Watts on the SKL processor.Facultad de Informátic
